Reason #19 – I only buy the cheapest clothes for C

Reason #19 – I only buy the cheapest clothes for C

Jun 08

Today I dashed into a store to get a pair of emergency PJs for C (kidless readers: maybe someday you’ll understand.) A very young salesman approached me with a tentative smile and an even more tentative offer of help.

Me: “I need a pair of boy’s PJs size 18 months. No, make it two years. Long trousers. Cheap. They’re just for an emergency.”

Him: (after about 10 minutes of aimlessly wandering the store) “Here! What about these?”

Me: (after looking at $10 price tag) “Oh my, no, this is waaaay too expensive. What are the cheapest you have?”

Him: *stare of disgust and disbelief at such an unabashedly stingy mother*

It took another 10 minutes of searching under the disapproving stares of two saleskids – who were probably swearing to themselves they would never be such miserly, tightwad parents – but I got C new jimjams! With robots! For about $5!!

My boy is too young to give a hoot about what he’s wearing, and he’s so cute he looks good in sackcloth.

Not that I’ve tried.

Haven’t found any for under $10.

my daughter gets hand-me-downs from her cousin (most of which have been worn once, or even still have the tags on them) or stuff from goodwill/salvation army. small children grow fast, and are expensive to diaper and feed. so I am all for second, and even third hand clothing, as long as it is in decent condition. my grandmother used to always tell me “Waste not, want not.” and it wasn’t until I became a mother myself that I finally started to get it.

These days I’m becoming a big fan of thred-up. A box of clothes for $15? That sounds about right to me. And hand-me-downs are the best!

  2. Spending copious amounts of mula on kid clothes is LAME LAME LAME!! They look cute the first time they get worn, may the second. Then they’re covered in stains, stretched out and worn. I go above and beyond buying cheap. I make a lot of my kids clothes out of my old clothes that no longer *ahem* fit and when the weather is nice (which is 11 months out of the year in southern california), I don’t een get them dressed! they can stay in underwear and get hosed off inthe yard if neccessary!
