Reason #134 – I let my son learn about surfaces the hard way
Reason #134 – I let my son learn about surfaces the hard way
Jan 12Some surfaces are soft and some are hard, some are smooth and some are rough.
But maybe 15 months of age is a smidgen too early to realise this?
C adores jumping on the bed. He jumps and jumps and jumps, and then for a grand finale he attempts to do a headstand which turns into a lopsided forward roll, ending with him splat on his back dissolved in giggles. Wuieee! Fun!
And today, for the first time, he actually jumped properly on a tile floor. Both feet left the ground at the same time! This is an Olympic feat! Somebody call ESPN!
But a tile floor is not a mattress.
Uh-oh.
I took a dive and caught him right before he went for the headstand. Disaster was narrowly averted.
…or was it?
Later today we were playing outside on my mom’s parking lot, which has – you guessed it – a pretty rough concrete floor. But it was time to go home, and somebody I won’t mention (cough-C-cough!) was not having any of it.
I tried to wrestle my baby lift that certain someone off the ground using the standard momma-hold (hands under armpits, grab firmly and hop!) but he decided to go for the classic evasive response (go limp and let shoulders rise to the ears.) This defensive maneuver usually works pretty well when I’m trying to lift this little person out of the kiddie pool or into his crib: he slips off my grip, lands on his knees, springs to his feet and makes a dash for water or freedom.
The maneuver worked as well as ever.
On concrete.
While wearing shorts.
OW. It hurt me just to look.
Coming up, we study the Law of Gravity. I’ll have 911 on speed dial just in case.

For me this is the most stressful part of being a mom. I have 3 kids that are always doing things that make me feel inadequate as a mother.

London learned about the fireplace a few days ago while I was in Germany checking on my house. Poor kids eye is jacked. Tis the age of falls and trips. Poor kid looks like a thug.

First of all, I am sure this was not the exact order of events, but from the look of things, you took a photo instead of catching your kid!
M’s newest thing is the limp shoulder trick- it is a BITCH! It’s usually followed by a completely arched back, which is troubling because it seems to suggest she wants out but if I let go, her head would be the first thing to hit the floor.
OH, and today? M slammed her head into the huge mirror over her changing table causing it to fall off the wall and hit her head in the exact same place AGAIN.
Who’s a crap mom NOW??

Design and safety seldom go hand in hand.
The bruises will heal.
Stick to the design.

I actually read the momma-hold/evasive maneuver bit to Mark.
Perfect.
And, sadly? This is a lesson he may have to take more than once before it sticks.

I think I may be cornering the market for toddler wrestling instruction. Maybe I could write an e-book, get rich!!
…spend my wealth in lawyers to get out of jail for wrestling with my toddler.
Oh well. It was swell while it lasted.

I love how you describe the limp shoulders to the ears… my daughter does that all the time… it so cracks me up!

It’s the funniest thing on Earth… until they land on gravel!

On the first night in our new house while we were assembling our bed, my 22 month old daughter was jusmping on the mattress, slipped and crashed her head into the headboard, knocking her unconscious. Called the ambulance, but they refused to examine her as she was awake when they arrived. They told us to take her to the hospital to which we replied that we didn’t know where it was having only been in the neighbourhood for a few hours. Many, many glasses of wine that night.

If you are American I really hope you sued their asses!
Also, I hope the kid got some wine too – she deserved it! ;)

What a riot! I see you are still up to the challenges of momhood and you are not bad at all :-)
How are you doing otherwise and Happy New Year! :-) It’s been awhile since we completed the SITSGirls Workshop and I topped by to say hello.

It doesn’t change. King of the crazies, O, is 2 years and 5 months, and he still does stellarly stupid moves jumping on and off of things. He stresses out me and his daycare provider!

Adrenaline addicts from day 1. I think C might be the reincarnation of Evel Knievel, but it’s still early days!

The photo makes him look like he has mad break-dancing skills! Bear often jumps or scoots off the couch and into the coffee table. He’s 19 months. Age doesn’t make reality any easier it seems.
