Reason #93 – I let my kid starve because I’m dumb

Reason #93 – I let my kid starve because I’m dumb

Oct 03

Sometimes my stupidity amazes me.

Normally I just take it for granted, but oo-ee, I outdid it yesterday.

I took C out for a playdate with the gorgeous little Swede, and we made a day of it: park, lunch at theirs, more play.

Since Ms Lilly was out and couldn’t take over, I dragged C along to the supermarket so the Swedish mama could get some food for her gorgeous blond brood. By this time it was late, late as in BEDTIME FOR C, and he was cranking up really nicely.

And then I got stupid. While the Viking mama did her shopping, C started auditioning for a job as a Hunger Artist.

“Give the boy one of our bananas!” Offered the Swedish mama.

“Nah, he’ll be fine.”

15 minutes later C is starting to die for real.

“Give the boy a banana!” Repeated the Swedish mama.

“Nah, he’ll be fine.”

This happened a few more times till we finished shopping. Ms. Lilly called announcing she was back, so I dropped C home immediately before driving the Viking mama home with her loot.

“Good grief, that poor boy was HUNGRY!” Said I on the way to the Swedes’.

“Why the HELL did you not just give him a banana like I told you??”

And the answer is… I don’t know.

I don’t know why I felt weird about taking the Swedish kids’ bananas. Is my son not worthy of them? Is it left over from the days when my grandma forbade me to eat other people’s food because “we have plenty of food at home”? Is it because I happened to be broke that instant and I couldn’t buy the stupid banana myself?

I let my boy go hungry for an hour or so out of sheer stupidity.

Somebody kick me.

  1. It’s okay. All 6 of mine are always starving at the store. Even if we JUST left a restaurant. I do one of the following:

    1. Remind them over and over that it literally takes days to starve to death and they will be fine.
    2. Offer them something repulsive like pigs’ feet.
    3. Mimic them until other people start staring.

Usually works pretty well for me! Although, I’m sure they’ll catch on at some point, yikes!

Well, since this is my first visit to your site I won’t offer to be the one to kick you. Maybe next time. Then again, maybe not because I’ve done stupidity so well before. I have denied my kids “something” because I couldn’t afford to purchase it myself, too! I hear ya!

bananas are always a shameful fruit.
but i think the refusing of food may have something to do with feeling insecure? like, “no, my kid doesn’t need your food, i am a competent mother who can provide for his needs”. but what the hell do i know. my kids beg for food so often from so many people, i’m immune. a simple “thank you” is a good response.

I’m usually pretty cavalier about letting him accept food from strangers. Maybe I felt weird because it was a friend’s food?

Or maybe I’m just an idiot.

  4. It’s okay, he won’t hold it against you.
This is all part of learning our kids’ wants. You’re human, not dumb!

C is getting even more handsome with time, how is that possible?
