Reason #96 – My boy kicked me out of our bedroom

Reason #96 – My boy kicked me out of our bedroom

Oct 08

C has been sleeping pretty badly of late. He is the best and bravest baby that ever was, but a mean chest cough and turbo-charged teething have made him miserable for the past few months weeks. Every night he wakes at 12, 2 and 4 am.

Every. Night.

He is seriously sleeping worse now – 3 days short of his first birthday – than he was at 3 or 4 months of age.

Thanks for nothing, Karma.

Since he kept waking me up every 2 hours every single bloody night and I was on the verge of becoming an axe murderess, I went out last Friday and crashed at my mom’s place. I got back the next morning, pretty refreshed after a decent night’s sleep, and fearfully asked the girls how he was. Had he been miserable all night? Were they able to get any shuteye at all?

“He slept like a rock!”

No way.

Saturday night I slept with him again, and again he woke up 3 times: 12, 2, 4 am.

FML.

There were two possible explanations: either C senses my presence and decides to make the most of the 24-7 room service, or Adi and Ms. Lilly sleep so soundly they don’t hear him cry.

There was only one way to find out.

So on Sunday night when Dani was crashing at her boyfriend’s place, I skulked over to her room with my pillow and duvet, jumping at the slightest sound that might mean C was ready to rumble.

He slept the whole night through.

GodDAMN. My son kicked me out of my room and he’s not yet 1.

Who’s in charge here again?

  1. Oh, this takes me back. It just doesn’t seem fair, does it?
Trouble is 7 and still occasionally gets up from his bed and comes in requesting to sleep in ours.

Long time no see you! *waving excitedly*

I guess that means that at some point I’ll be allowed back in my room?

Nah, it probably just means we need a bigger house.

  3. I love it! When my #4 was about 4 months old, he still slept in a bassinet in my room. When he would wake up, he would get on his hands and knees and poke his little head up to see if we were awake. We learned to sleep with the blankets completely over our heads, because if he saw our faces he would freak out! Then it got to the point where he started flipping out if he even saw the blanket move! It got absurd, and he got bumped to his own room. Well, actually to #1′s room. Then #1 got to deal with sleeping motionless, with blankets covering him from head to toe! But hey, at least I got a good night’s sleep! :P

  4. Same thing happened to us. When we finally moved Max out of our room, he immediately started sleeping better! So very annoying.

  5. What can I say, he’s one smart little cookie… but so are you and you will need to change that game plan. Good luck there! Aren’t our little ones such genius? I had to laugh when I read this… Oh boy!

Hey, fellow lamb! Yes, he’s a clever little cookie, and he will get the room to himself as soon as I find one for me…

  6. Little rascal! So… does that mean you’re moving back in with your mom? I’m sure your housemates won’t notice if you sneak out after everyone is in bed and sneak back in before everyone wakes in the morning…

Nah.. too far away. I may just buy a sofa bed and crash in the front room!

It’s hard to take a bad photo of him. Seriously. He looks cute even with a fever and a face full of snot.

Nah, I figure what my mom doesn’t know won’t hurt her ;)

You might have to start sleeping on the couch! He’s trying to be all “big boy” cause he’s turning 1. You tell him he’s still your baby and you want to snuggle him and have him sleep through the night. Darn kids. That pic of him zonked out on his back is too cute by the way!

  13. Perhaps, my dear, you snore? Or talk in your sleep? Thus waking HIM up. Maybe if he could write a blog post it’d be “DAMN, my mother snores! Thank god she slept in another room that other night, I managed to get some real sleep. She’s so free-range and relaxed about this whole parenting thing, you’d think the woman would give me some space for sleeping!”

(comment made with love, not nastiness, a’course :) )

My mom and I were debating that possibility today – that *I* am the one who wakes him up.

We need a greater (and freeer) range.

    Briana Reply:

Debating how? Was she the one saying you were? If so, she might have to admit co-sleeping isn’t going to work for much longer, haha.

    [Reply to this]

    ofthesea Reply:

Yeah… but in that case she might suggest that *I* be the one shipped to the psycho military school while the “poor poor boy” sleeps on my perfect ergonomic mattress.

  14. You know the best part about this post – your listening to him even when he’s asleep – he just needs some space. :) Hope you both get some much needed sleep so that you can party like it’s his birthday!
